Hey guys!  I was able to catch up with ROXY Grom riders, Kirby Kelly (13) and Ty Walker (12), at the ROXY Chicken Jam to find out what it's like to compete at such a young age.  These girls might look small but they can really rip it on the slopes- not to mention they have out-of-this-world personalities too!  They're girls you just want to be around!  Check 'em out:

How’s it being here at the RCJ?
KK: It’s really fun –it’s my first year here, just excited to be here
TW: I’m stoked to be here- it’s awesome

How’s it feel to be so young and compete with girls a lot older than you?
KK: It’s pretty cool, I know I’m going to catch up to them soon

Are there any older girls that you look up to, or who inspires you?
KK: Torah Bright, she’s so cool and so good at snowboarding

Do you have any advice for younger girls that want to be more involved in snowboarding or ride professional?
KK: Don’t be embarrassed to be out there with all the guys, because that’s how I was.  Just go for it!
TW: Practice as much as your can because once you’re done with the bruises from your first few days it’s really really fun to get out there

How would you describe your style or what's your favorite trick?
KK: My favorite trick is back 5 in pipe, I just like stomping it and right away it feels so good.
TW: My style is more laid back

How’s it feel to be a grom on the ROXY Team?
KK: It’s so cool- being here and meeting everyone else who rides for ROXY.  I don’t see them all very much because I’m all the way in Illinois
TW: I don’t even know my favorite part.  It’s so cool and so nice- we all just like to get out there and ride to show off our different styles

Do you girls have a little healthy competition going on between the two of you?
KK: Yea, Ty's super good at Slopestyle and my strength is Pipe so we definitely push each other
TW: A little bit, Kirby's strength is more Pipe, and mine’s more Slopes- so it’s more helping each other than really a competition between the two of us

Congrats to Slopestyle Winners!

Winners of Slopestyle Competition

Congratulation to Janna Mayan-Weatherby! She won first place in the Roxy Chicken Jam Slopestyle competition. She had an amazing day taking home the $15,000 prize purse for the gold and winning the Zumiez Best Trick Award. Her Rock-to-Fakie scored her an additional $1,500 from Zumiez. Janna’s second run consisted of a Japan air, gap 50-50 on the rail, backside 540 stalefish, cab 720 mute, cab 540 mute, and a 50-50 on the box.

Jenny Jones from Great Britain took home the silver and the $7,000 prize purse. Her third run consisted of a frontside, 50-50 180 off on the box, cab 360, cab 540, frontside 720, and 50-50 on the box.

Roxy rider Lisa Wiik from Norway had a phenomenal day. She came in third and won $3,000. Her first run consisted of a method, 50-50 backside boardslip on the rail, frontside 360 stalefish, backside 360 indy, backside 540 indy and a 50-50 on the box.

“I am stoked about getting third in the Chicken Jam because I was twelfth after the qualifier,” said Lisa, “I had to get myself together and have a solid run.”

Not only did she pull through and win third in the Chicken Jam, but Lisa also got second in the TTR!

“Can’t believe I got second in the TTR,” said Lisa “I’m really stoked right now!”

The event concluded with the crowning of the 2008/2009 TTR Champion Kelly Clark. This is her second consecutive year winning the title. Lisa Wiik came in second and Jamie Anderson in third.

This was a great event! Hope to see you next year!

Results from Slopestyle Semis

Monday morning the Slopestyle competition went off. 35 riders competed in the main event. Each rider got two runs to qualify for the finals. The Roxy girls were all there: Alexis Waite, Amber Stackhouse, Erin Comstock, Lisa Wiik, Tania Detomas, Robin Van Gyn, and Kjersti Buaas. Lisa Wiik had a really good run and qualified for the finals.

Below are the top 12 moving onto the finals:

1. Janna Mayan-Weatherby
2  Spencer O'Brien
3. Silvia Mittermueller
4. Cheryl Maas
5. Raewyn Reid
6. Chanelle Sladics
7. Jenny Jones
8. Tara Dakides
9. Thea Stenshagen
10.Isabelle Lalive
11.Hana Beaman
12.Lisa Wiik

I caught up with Amber Stackhouse after her run. This was Amber’s first contest and last contest of the season, she has been busy filming for next season’s Podcasts. Amber’s favorite part of the course were the jumps but she doesn’t have a favorite jump per say.

“The conditions out here are the best they’ve been all week actually” said Amber, “the course is really fast. It’s firm but in a good way you can put solid runs together. There isn’t any grabby snow or runts to get caught in so it’s really good.”

Stay tuned for the results from the Slopestyle finals and the TTR World Champ.

ROXY Interns Take Over Mammoth Mountain

Hey guys, just wanted to give you a behind-the-scenes look at a day in the life of a ROXY intern.  My name's Tivoli and I intern in the ROXY Marketing department.  I'm here in Mammoth helping out for the Chicken Jam doing a bit of everything- meeting fans at the ROXY booth in the sponsor village, checking in athletes at registration, placing ROXY banners throughout the Slopestyle course, and most importantly... having a blast!  Here's some footage of me cruzing up the mountain with fellow intern Natasha, courtesy of our new friend Patrick...

Slopestyle Competition Postponed to Monday

Because of heavy winds, the Slopestyle competition has been postponed until Monday at 10 am. We will be doing a condensed version of the competition at that time tomorrow with each rider taking two runs in the main session and three in the final. Check back tomorrow for more info about the comp!

The Skinny on the Slopestyle Course

The slopestyle course is sick. Wanting to know more about it, I interviewed our friend Oren Tanzer again to get the skinny on this course:

“Slopestyle course is really fun this year, that was the goal when we were building it,” said Oren, “Not to build huge scary jumps that the girls wouldn’t feel comfortable on. The progression has more to do with the style and being able to land the tricks rather than stressing over the sizes of the jumps.

It’s not the largest but it’s definitely unique in a couple of ways. First, it starts with a hip jump, which is different from most slopestyles. Then you get into a couple of high speed jib features: a flat down rail and next to that is a down box. They’re over a short gap so there are some consequences there. After the jibs you go down into the jump section of the course. They’ve got three jumps in a row: first ones measures into the knuckle of about thirty five feet, the second one measure into the knuckle at forty feet and the third one at about forty five feet. After you clear those you have the Zumiez wall ride and then another feature they call the planter box at the bottom of the course.

For a lot of these competitor that are riding slopestyle, probably to them, one of the more difficult features would be the hip because they’re not used to training necessarily on a hip. It’s also the trickiest thing to build and maintain from a park’s standpoint.”

Cool, thanks Oren. Due to strong winds this morning, the Slopestyle event has been postponed. Hopefully we will be able to start the main event today at noon and see the competitors tackle the course.

Santigold and Cold War Kids Rocked the Village

Santigold and Cold War Kids Rocked

Santi On Stage with Her Dancers

The Santigold and Cold War Kids rocked 5,000 fans last night at the concert in the Village.

Santigold had the crowd dancing and singing along to her pumping melodies. I absolutely loved what she was wearing – a big leopard print furry jacket, giant gold earrings, and black pants. She was amazing. Joining her on stage were her two gold-clad back-up singers/dancers. Security couldn’t seem to keep fans off the stage…everyone wanted to dance with Santi! To help appease zealous followers, Santi invited up one fan to dance with her ladies on stage…she chose this guy wearing a Panda hat and he rocked it (following along with her dancers perfectly).

After Santigold’s performance Cold War Kids took the stage and played an amazing set. Fans enjoyed the tunes from the beer garden, up above the village from the Gondola station or right next to the stage. The entire village was pumping. I loved the Roxy heart ice sculpture. It looked really cool all lit up. Behind the sculpture you can see Cold War Kids playing. Good times!
